Zeche Hugo is an abandoned coal mine located in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Established in 1873, the mine operated up until 2000 before nearly exhausting the coal seam beneath Gelsenkirchen. Zeche Hugo is famous for its unusual ‘hall of bird cages’. Officially known as ‘Kaue’, they were used to hold workers’ clothing and possessions during their shifts.
